John Breathitt's memorandum book : diary, 1804-1805.

The diary records the events of two trips John Breathitt made in 1804-1805. The first trip described is one he took from his home in Christian County, Kentucky to St. Vincennes, Indiania Territory, in 1804. In this account he gives itinerary information, descriptions of Native Americans he encountered, weather, geographic and geological data. He then goes on to describe the tour of Vincennes and the business he transacted there.

The John Breathitt that kept this journal is most likely the sameperson who became Kentucky's governor in 1832. His death in 1834 made him the second of the Commonweath's governors to die in office. Born in Virginia in 1786, his family moved to Logan County (part of which became Christian County), Kentucky, around 1800.
